Shamwari, meaning 'friend' in the Shona language, overlooks the Bushman's River near Port Elizabeth and is the perfect start or conclusion to a Garden Route expedition. The malaria-free reserve was built up from scratch, with the land having been bought and rejuvenated piece by piece by Mantis' founder, Adrian Gardiner.
Accommodation is offered in six separate luxury lodges. Long Lee Manor, offers a distinctive Colonial experience, housing 18 luxury rooms and suites, and safely accommodates children of all ages. A wellness centre is also available for guests to enjoy rejuvenating spa treatments. Bushmans River Lodge is a unique historical site with its 4 suites decorated in an artistic African theme. Riverdene Lodge is a restored settler's lodge with 9 suites and boasts a magnificent thatched boma, situated on the verge of the Bushmans River Valley, which is an inviting venue to relax while enjoying the sights and sounds of Shamwari. The ethnically decorated Lobengula Lodge with its thatched roofs is tucked deep in the valley bushveld. It offers 12 guests a tranquil, luxurious and exclusive getaway as well as a wellness centre. Bayethe Lodge is a 5-star, luxury lodge comprising of 9-tented suites. A magnificent bushveld-type lodge made of stonewalls and thatch, accommodates the lounge, dining room, an outdoor banquet boma, swimming pool and viewing deck overlooking the Buffalo River, a tributary to the great Bushmans River. Shamwari's premier lodge, the magnificent stone and thatch Eagles Crag, with its own wellness centre opened in October 2002. There are nine detached suites, each with private deck and plunge pool. The lodge has dining deck, outdoor boma area and large lounge. All suites have spacious bathrooms with two vanity basins, separate indoor and outdoor showers.
Game drives/walks are experienced with fully qualified game rangers in open top vehicles, and the Reserve has five eco-systems, enabling the support of many forms of plant, animal and bird life. History was made in 2001 when Shamwari became the first privately owned Game Reserve to dedicate a sizeable portion to the Wilderness area. Shamwari has been voted the 'World's Leading Conservation Company' and 'World's Leading Safari and Game Reserve' for the past 8 years.
